Notes on talk by Bishop Thomas Dowd: Evil, Suffering and Disaster: Where is God?

According to Catechism of the Catholic Church #309,
If God the Father almighty, the Creator of the ordered and good world, cares for all his creatures, why does evil exist? To this question, as pressing as it is unavoidable and as painful as it is mysterious, no quick answer will suffice. Only Christian faith as a whole constitutes the answer to this question: the goodness of creation, the drama of sin and the patient love of God who comes to meet man by his covenants, the redemptive Incarnation of his Son, his gift of the Spirit, his gathering of the Church, the power of the sacraments and his call to a blessed life to which free creatures are invited to consent in advance, but from which, by a terrible mystery, they can also turn away in advance. There is not a single aspect of the Christian message that is not in part an answer to the question of evil.
There is no quick answer for this. There are some concepts that we discussed in the talk.

The root of suffering is SIN.

Suffering applies only to Earth Beings (Humans or Animals) and Angelical beings.

We can categories different kinds of Evil (Sin). There are 2 kinds of Evil or sin. They are moral evil and natural evil.

Moral evil only applies to Human or Angel because God gives them free will. The different is that human has a chance to repent his/her sins but not for angel. Angel’s first moral choice will determine if it is a demon or not. The reason is that there is no “time” element in the Angel world.
Angels do not have man's shortcomings and can therefore act for God and represent Him when communicating with men and women. They bridge the huge gap between the holiness and perfection of God in heaven and the shortcomings of dying people on this planet. Angels were made immortal (that is, never to die). – http://www.catholic.org/saints/angel.php
There are 2 kinds of Moral sin. They are commission or omission. Sin of commission is to do something wrong under full knowledge on the action. Sin of omission means that we did not do or failed to do what we can or must do.

Natural evil only applies to beings that have a body. There are 2 kinds of Natural evil, they are physical and metaphysical.

Physical evil includes all that causes harm to mankind, i.e. hurricane, HIV virus. It is directly due to nature are sickness, accident, death, etc.

Metaphysical evil is the limitation of human beings. This is things that we are lock on which can be completed by something or someone that God made. God created a world that can be harmony on itself, however, because we sin, our “meta-physical” part does not work. E.g., Hungers are not helped while most of the wealth is hold by first world country. In this case, the metaphysical evil is the hunger and God created us which can help the people to avoid hunger.

The consequences after we sin

There are two consequences when we sin. First is that we hurt ourselves. We hurt our soul. It just like when we get sick. Bishop Tom also mentioned it is not easy to define the word Healthy. We think that we are healthy since we never go to have a body check or we did not see which parts of our body get hurts.

Secondly, sin holds back the improvement of human being. If we look back the last 100 years, we spent too much money, time and man power on wars, weapons or things that hurt the harmony of our society. If we put all the resources on other areas like medical research, Cancer or HIV should be cured long time ago. Buildings won’t be destroyed by earthquake or hurricane. Also, no more poor and hungers! Therefore, sin we made will slow down the progression of human beings and that makes us suffer.

What’s the solution? US, we need to do something about it!!!

Somebody asked if Death is a kind of suffering? It brings to the point that we can think of Dormition/Assumption of Virgin Mary. Dormition means falling asleep. If we have enough faith, we fall asleep in this world and wake up on the other side.

Hope this help. God Bless!

Review my year 2010

This year is not a good year for me.

At the end of 2009, I thought I will have less things to complete in the following year (2010) since I have finished organizing ECCCLC 2009, requested to stop teaching Sunday School and had less responsibility in the Montreal Chinese Catholic Youth Club. In fact, it does not happen. Problems did not go away because of less responsibility. There are 10x more problems than before. These problems are seriously hurting everyone. It broke lots of relationship between friends and relatives. I don't like this.

However, this year, my relationship with God has improved a lot. My prayer quality has been improved. Thanks for Fr. Francis Ching's teaching about prayer. He told me to pray "SPECIFICALLY". Do not put your prayer into an abstract way. I thank God specifically. I request what I need specifically too. I can feel my relationship between God and me get closer every time I finished a prayer. I think when you know a new friend, you also want to know him better. We can know a friend by communication. We can also know a friend by reading his/her blog. Bible is God's blog actually. Whenever my relationship with God get closer, I felt a strong hit from the Evil. Problems come up again and I sin again and again and again.... I can feel my weakness. BUT, God is great! God keeps telling me to fight the Evil with Jesus.

2010 will be passed in 10 days! I hope the Evil can stop attacking me. I will keep praying and hope you all can keep praying for me too.

One little memorable situation:

2 days ago, FLL had a TV episode about Br. Andre and they have interviewed me for around 1 min. I did not even watch it since I was on my way back from Toronto to Montreal. Monday morning (yesterday), I passed through the food court at Eaton Center. There was a person (that I don't know) stopped me and asked me if I am a Chinese and if I can speak Canto. She said she saw me on TV yesterday. Wow... it was only a less than one minute interview and I thought that not many people will watch「生命恩泉」in Montreal... but, that's really wrong!!!!!! Please support 「生命恩泉」.

The following 3 links are the episode about Br. Andre:

Prayer of Salvation

Prayer to be Said Every Day to Obtain the Graces Necessary for Salvation, by St. Alphonsus

Eternal Father, Thy Son has promised that Thou wilt grant us all the graces which we ask Thee for in His name. In the name, therefore, and by the merits of Jesus Christ, I ask the following graces for myself and for all mankind:

And first, I pray Thee to give me a lively faith in all that the holy Roman Church teaches me. Enlighten me also, that I may know the vanity of the goods of this world, and the immensity of the Infinite Good that Thou art; make me also see the deformity of the sins I have committed, that I may humble myself and detest them as I ought; and, on the other hand, show me how worthy Thou art, by reason of Thy goodness, that I should love Thee with all my heart. Make me know also the love Thou has borne me, that from this day forward I may try to be grateful for so much goodness.

Secondly, give me a firm confidence in Thy mercy of receiving the pardon of my sins, holy perseverance, and, finally, the glory of paradise, through the merits of Jesus Christ and the intercession of Mary.

Thirdly, give me a great love toward Thee, which shall detach me from the love of this world and of myself, so that I may love none other but Thee, and that I may neither do nor desire anything else but what is for Thy glory.

Fourthly, I beg of Thee a perfect resignation to Thy will, in accepting with tranquility sorrows, infirmities, contempt, persecutions, aridity of spirit, loss of property, of esteem, of relations, and every other cross which shall come to me from Thy hands. I offer myself entirely to Thee, that thou mayest do with me, and all that belongs to me, what thou pleasest; do Thou only give me light and strength to do Thy will, and, especially at the hour of death, help me to sacrifice my life to Thee with all the affection I am capable of, in union with the sacrifice which Thy Son Jesus Christ made of His life on the cross of Calvary.

Fifthly, I beg of Thee a great sorrow for my sins, which may make me grieve over them as long as I live, and weep for the insults I have offered Thee, the Sovereign Good, who art worthy of infinite love, and who hast loved me so much.

Sixthly, I pray Thee to give me the spirit of true humility and meekness, that I may accept with peace, and even with joy, all the contempt, ingratitude and ill-treatment that I may receive. At the same time I also pray Thee to give me perfect charity, which shall make me wish well to those who have done evel to me, and to do what good I can, at least by praying, for those who have in any way injured me.

Seventhly, I beg of Thee to give me a love for the virtue of holy mortification, by which I may chastise my rebellious senses, and cross my self-love; at the same time I beg Thee to give me holy purity of body, and the grace to resist all bad temptations, by ever having recourse to Thee and Thy most Holy Mother.

Give me the grace faithfully to obey my spiritual father and all my superiors in all things. Give me an upright intention, that in all I desire and do I may seek only Thy glory, and to please Thee alone. Give me a great confidence in the Passion of Jesus Christ, and in the intercession of Mary Immaculate. Give me a great love toward the most Adorable Sacrament of the Altar, and a tender devotion and love to Thy Holy Mother. Give me, I pray Thee, above all, holy perseverance, and the grace always to pray for it, especially in time of temptation and at the hour of death.

Lastly, I recommend to Thee the holy souls in Purgatory, my relations and benefactors; and in an especial manner I recommend to Thee all those who hate me, or who have in any way offended me; I beg of Thee to render them good for the evil they have done, or may wish to do me. I also recommend to Thee all infidels, heretics, and all poor sinners; give them light and strength to deliver themselves from sin. O, most loving God, make Thyself known and loved by all, but especially by those who have been more ungrateful to Thee than others, so that by Thy goodness I may come one day to sing Thy mercies in paradise; for my hope is in the merits of Thy Blood, and in the patronage of Mary. O Mary, Mother of God, pray to Jesus for me! So I hope; so may it be!

OTHER VERSION
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

"Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen."

My 1st Macintosh Computer

Recently, I got a new Mac computer. Yes, it is expensive. I of course have my reason to get it, but the reason is not important to put it here.

However, there is a good and close friend of mine keep saying that Apple inc. donates money to support same-sex marriage which has conflict with my Catholic religion catechism. Before, I think that she just wants to remind me and will stop saying this after 1 or 2 days. However, she keeps saying this. I somehow want to say "What do you want? I have my reason to get this laptop which you know it!!!! Stop criticizing my decision and my lovely Mac book!!!"

Of course, The reason I sound mad is somehow, I agree on her too. LOL... this idea keeps running in my brain days and days and days... (Yes, actually can't sleep Then, I opened my Bible and read the following scripture:

Tribute to Caesar (Matthew 22:15-22)

...then the Pharisees went and plotted together how they might trap Him in what He said. And they sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any.

"Tell us then, what do You think? Is it lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?" But Jesus perceived their malice, and said, "Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites?"Show Me the coin used for the poll-tax." And they brought Him a denarius. And He said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?"

They said to Him, "Caesar's." Then He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's."

And hearing this, they were amazed, and leaving Him, they went away.
Of course, I understand that buying a computer from Mac is totally different from paying tax to government. One thing came to my mind is that should we still pay tax to Canada government although we know that they are using our money to support "abortion, contraception, same-sex marriage, war...etc" which are also conflicting our faith. According to Jesus, I think, yes, we should still pay tax. Not paying tax will not help on these situations. As a catholic, we should try our best to influence the government to avoid these kind of things.

As a Mac user now, I will try to send a letter to Apple Inc. and tell them my point of view. Also, as a catholic, we should keep doing evangilisation, teach people the "truth". Last Saturday in the Mandarin Sunday School class, one of my students asked me a very interesting question, "Do you think if a person hurts another person because he does not have a chance to learn anything about love, God or Jesus, will that person still goes to hell after he died?" My answer is, "I don't know. However, Jesus may blame to some of us (Catholic), because we did not do our job well which is ... " The 12-year-old kid said immidiately, "EVANGILISATION!!!!"... haha

Of course, I still don't know if my decision on buying a Mac is right or wrong, but I am sure that God knows what I am doing, and believe me or not, he (God) will "contact" me very quickly if I have something wrong.

with love,
Ah B

Update finally

Has been 1 week I did not update the blog. It is because of the war!!!! Haha... For those who understand the war, you are either my very close friend or actually inside the war. Anyway, I am recovered.

Last week, I went to mass everyday except for thursday. Daily mass gave me strength to pass through all the hard moment. God did help me. After the mass, I felt very peaceful. I can feel Jesus really holding my hands and walking with me. I know some of you may think that I am crazy, but it is true.

If you would like to join me for mass. Please tell me and we can definitely go together.

God bless,
Ah B.

Will God punish people?

Today's question: Will God punish people?

No, God will not punish people.

>>> But, how come the punishment is clearly written in the old testament?

Wow.... we first need to understand that Bible is a collection of books. The books are a record of progress of the people. A Progress of how people understand God. It is just like a Math textbook from Grade 1 to Grade 12. So the books don’t record what God said but what people said about him. In the old Testaments, God was more of a person, which included emotions like anger and wrath. Then he was presented as a King until the Christians believed that God is love. As St. John said, “God is love.” He was the last to die and for now, was the peak for our learning. So the Old Testament prepares for the New Testament while the New Testament completes the Old Testament.

Jesus said in John 12:47 - 48, "If anyone hears my words and does not keep them faithfully, it is not I who shall judge such a person, since I have come not to judge the world, but to save the world: anyone who rejects me and refuses my words has his judge already: the word itself that I have spoken will be his judge on the last day." He is not coming to judge us. If there is no judge yet, there will be no punishment happen yet!!!

Keep in mind that the judge day will be on the last day. Did you prepare for it? If there is an angel in front of you, show you a button and said "If you press this button, the last day will be now and everyone will get his judge day. Will you press it?" This basically means one can go to the heaven right away. Most of the people will go to do confession right away and then press it which is kind of funny. You never know if the end of the day will be the next second. By then, we will not have enough time for confession anymore. So, choose to not sin will be the best choice here.

Do you know who will press the button without even think about it? --- Kids.

If Judas is a wrong choice for Jesus?

As some of you may know, I am a Sunday school teacher. I always received questions about Catholic faith. I would like to answer all of them by using the blog. I hope this can help other to understand God more.

Today's question: If Judas is a wrong choice for Jesus?

My answer is "I don't think so".

People think that it is a wrong choice because they think that Jesus chose somebody to betray him which is not a good thing. I believe that all this is under God's plan. In John 6:64 [But there are some of you who do not believe...], Jesus knew that among his disciples, not everyone has strong faith and some of them even "do not believe" and would "betray" him. After that, In John 6:66 [And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father."] And if you keep reading the passage, people left because of Jesus told them the path to go to heaven, the best path of our life...

In John chapter 6, it actually stated that Jesus chose Judas in verse 70 [Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you twelve? Yet is not one of you a devil?"]. It is clear that Jesus said there is an evil among one of the deciple. What?? Jesus chose a devil?

To answer this, we need to understand that "Freedom" is one of the most important gifts that God gave us. We have freedom to do anything, including to sin. Judas has the choice to not sin, however he chose to do that. Devil thinks that by killing Jesus is the only way to mess up God's plan. Devil thinks that he is almighty too... haha. God knows it clearly since God is the real almighty. God knows Devil's plan well. Devil does not know that God can tranform the plan into this huge salvation plan. Devil does not know that by killing Jesus, will turn lots of people into believers. Because of the resurrection of Jesus, Christian faith become well known and changed lots of people's heart. God used Devil's plan to fulfil his own plan. Isn't it powerful? Yes, because God is almighty.
